New parents at increased risk of depression

Bringing home a new baby can be stressful. But new research finds anxious new parents can be at an increased risk of depression.

That goes for new moms and dads.

The findings in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine bolster evidence that mothers are more vulnerable to developing depression after giving birth.

But researchers also suggest that new fathers, a group much less studied , face a higher than normal risk as well.

For both parents the risk was highest during the first year of their child's life.
