The Chicago Teachers Union is supporting a group of parents fighting to bring a library to Whittier Elementary School in the Pilsen neighborhood.

On Friday, union officers joined parents and their backers, who have been staging a sit-in for the past two weeks.

They want to stop the demolition of the school's fieldhouse.

Union members donated more than 500 books to Whittier students to support the plan to build a library in the fieldhouse.

Chicago Public Schools officials say the building is structurally unsound and needs to be torn down.
