Two Chicago-area residents died and seven other people were injured when a semitrailer driver by another Illinois resident slammed into the back of a vehicle on I-94 in Minnesota and allegedly caused a chain-reaction crash.

The Minnesota State Patrol says 78-year-old Thomas Williams of Sandwich, Ill., and Sophie Mitzel, 46, of Aurora, Ill., died Sunday night when their Chrysler Carryall rolled off the interstate and on top of another vehicle.

Two others involved in the five-vehicle crash were critically injured. The State Patrol says five others suffered minor injuries. The driver of the semi wasn't hurt.

The State Patrol says traffic had slowed on the interstate because of a car fire and the semi was going too fast.

The driver of the semi accused of triggering the chain reaction crash is identified as a man from southwest suburban Orland Park.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
