Vatican: Homer Simpson 'true Catholic'

October 19, 2010 In a story over the weekend, the Vatican newspaper praised the show for the way it addresses religion, God and family on a regular basis.

The paper says Homer is "a true Catholic" at heart, despite his love for beer and goofball antics and a habit of falling asleep during church sermons.

However, the show's executive producer, Al Jean, hesitated to call Homer "holy."

Jean pointed out that the famous TV cartoon dad once sold his soul to the devil for a doughnut. Jean also says Homer could not go without meat on Fridays, "even for an hour."
