The two U.S. senators from Illinois say they had a very encouraging meeting Thursday afternoon aimed at mediating the dispute.
Democrat Dick Durbin and Republican Mark Kirk met with the CEOs of United and American airlines. The airlines have filed a lawsuit against the city to stop the sale of bonds for the expansion project.
The lawsuit contends the city is violating terms of the airlines' lease agreements by going ahead with plans to sell more than $1 billion in bonds to begin phase 2 of the expansion project.
