Free driving safety classes offered to seniors

March 21, 2011 (CHICAGO)

There are more than 1.2 million drivers in Illinois who are 65 or older, which 14 percent of all licensed drivers in the state.

There are a quarter-million drivers who are 80 or older.

A thousand of the refresher courses are given around the state each year and they're free.

"These driver safety courses are extremely important as they not only teach valuable defensive driving techniques but older persons also learn adjustments to accommodate common age relate changes in hearing, vision and reaction times," said Charles Johnson, Illinois Department of Aging

Seniors who successfully complete the course may be eligible for car insurance discounts.
