Residents in downstate Cairo returned to their homes temporarily Saturday.

The town sits at the confluence of the flooded Ohio and Mississippi rivers. Both rivers remain at near-record highs.

An evacuation was ordered last Saturday as the rivers hit record levels.

Residents are now allowed daytime visits to check on their properties and to pick up necessities.
