A Chicago police officer has died after suffering what appears to be a heart attack while on duty.

The officer was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago hospital.

A procession of officers and firefighters escorted his body from the hospital to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office Friday morning.

The officer's name has not been released.

A department spokesperson says he was in his late 40s and he became ill while on the job Thursday.

An autopsy will be performed Friday.
