Child patients may get too many meds

September 6, 2011

Many young hospital patients receive a variety of medications even though it's not always clear if the drugs are safe and effective. That's the conclusion of a study in the journal Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.

The authors studied more than 580,000 young patients. Some received as many as 13 drugs on the first day of hospitalization.

After a weeklong stay, others were given as many as 35 medications. Researchers say their findings highlight the need for more research into the use of medication for young patients.
