Mayor Rahm Emanuel is implementing something new for city employees: Paid maternity leave benefit.

Within a month, the mayor will give female city employees who give birth four to six weeks leave. Their spouses or partners will get one week.

Parents who adopt a child will get two weeks.

All the time off will be with pay.

The changes will be for non-union city employees.

Leave for union members will wait until new contracts are negotiated.
