Lawmakers question Quinn over delay of DCFS firing

November 15, 2011 (SPRINGFIELD, Ill.)

Committee chairmen Greg Harris and Jack Franks said the hearings will take place December. They want to ask Gov. Quinn why it took four months to remove Department of Children and Family Services Director Erwin McEwen even though sate inspectors say McEwen created a lax environment that cost the state millions of dollars in shoddy or non-existent work.

The hearing would be conducted by the House committees on human services and government administration.

Quinn's office said it worked quickly to look at the allegations make changes without disrupting the agency. In a statement, the governor's office said, "After the Governor's office received the [Office of the Executive Inspector General] OEIG report, we conducted own extensive review and cancelled all contracts related to this matter. In addition, while the OEIG did not recommend action against former director McEwen, the Governor asked him to step down."
