Study: Medical helicopters increase survival rate

April 17, 2012

According to a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, a chopper flight to the hospital is linked to a 1.5 percent increased rate of survival . That number may seem small, but it means that for every 65 patients taken by helicopter, a life will be saved.

But the flights can be pricey, and as a recent surge of medical helicopter crashes shows, potentially dangerous.

These potential downsides have some experts concerned that these flights just aren't worth it.
