ComEd wants rate hike, more smart meters

May 1, 2012 (CHICAGO)

The Illinois Commerce Commission must approve the increase, which the utility says is needed to upgrade the power grid.

ComEd will also roll out more "smart meters" to customers who live along the Eisenhower Expressway. The digital devices turn off electricity at peak times and help the energy grid operate more efficiently.

All customers are expected to have the meters within 10 years.
