Bus carrying 6th graders slams into truck

Eleven students were injured when their school bus collided with a semi near the downstate town of Litchfield Monday.

The bus was carrying sixth graders home to Grantfork Upper Elementary School in Highland, Ill., after a field trip to Springfield. The accident happened on Interstate 55.

One student was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries. The bus driver was also injured and is in serious condition. Seven other students were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

The unidentified driver of the bus was also seriously injured.

Illinois State Police and local authorities are investigating the accident, which shut southbound Interstate 55 for several hours.
