Lovable Labrador wins Chicago's Dogs of Distinction competition

May 25, 2012 (CHICAGO)

City Clerk Susana Mendoza made the announcement Friday.

Wilma is owned by Gregg and Erin Syzmanski. They say her hobbies include walking in bungalow-filled neighborhoods, playing at the dog beach and barking at garbage men.

Dogs that registered with the city were entered into the contest. Then the field was narrowed to five.

The clerk's office held the contest to highlight the need for dog owners to register their pets.

"It's a very serious public health issue, because when dogs are registered with the city, we are able to verify that those dogs are indeed vaccinated for rabies," said Mendoza.

Wilma will receive a dog tag replica of the Chicago city flag with rubies and topaz.
