New York Christmas tree recycling begins Jan. 2

NEW YORK

The program will run from Wednesday through Jan. 12.

All ornaments, tinsel and other decorations must be removed before placing the tree out for pickup.

The Department of Sanitation says residents should NOT place the trees in plastic bags.

The collected trees will be chipped and turned into compost. The fertilizer will be spread over parks, ball fields and community gardens.

Every years, the agency mulches approximately 140,000 discarded Christmas trees.
