'Brain fog' worst in first year of menopause, study finds

January 3, 2013

Rochester Medical Center researchers found memory deficits are most evident during the first year following their final menstrual cycle.

They found women in the early stage of menopause performed lower on tests that assessed their attention/working memory, verbal learning, verbal memory and fine motor speed and dexterity.

They say this could be explained because certain parts of the brain are rich with estrogen receptors and the onset of menopause is associated with a drop in estrogen levels.
