No cases of the coronavirus, known as hCoV-EMC, have been discovered in the U.S. Still, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention is telling doctors to report any cases of patients with unexplained respiratory illnesses within 10 days of travelling to the Middle East.
The virus was first identified last September. It has been linked clinically and genetically to the SARS virus, which killed hundreds of people worldwide about a decade ago.
Five people have died from the outbreak in Saudi Arabia, two in Jordan and one person in the United Kingdom. The U.K. death worries officials the most, since it’s considered to be the first evidence of human-to-human transmission, as well as a coinfection with the flu.
