BP refinery evacuated because of equipment failure

April 11, 2013 (WHITING, Ind.)

No one was injured and the company's internal fire department was able to handle the situation, according to BP.

The company says there was an equipment failure that forced them to do a controlled burn and that sent some materials into the air. One witness says he saw flames shooting 150 feet up in to the air.

It happened in a unit that produces gasoline and that unit was evacuated.

BP has reported the incident to state environmental officials.
