Careless smoking may have sparked a house fire in suburban South Elgin.

Firefighters were called to a home on Beck Street around 9 a.m. Wednesday morning and found an elderly woman in a wheelchair just inside the doorway.

Her husband's body, identified as 72-year-old Thomas Hasier, was later found in a bedroom.

Frozen fire hydrants in the area reportedly hampered initial efforts to fight the fire.

Investigators say there were no smoke detectors in the home.
