Avalon Park baby Amaris Lawson found, dad Nathaniel Lawson arrested after kidnapping

May 5, 2014 (CHICAGO)

The child was found just down the street from where she was taken, officials said, hours later. Police said the 4-month-old girl was taken to Comer Children's Hospital to get checked out, and was reunited with her mother on Monday.

The infant's father, 22-year-old Nathaniel Lawson, was arrested. Police said he abducted his daughter at gunpoint after an argument with the baby's mother.

The suspect's father said the couple fought inside his apartment in the 1100-block of East 82nd Street. He said his son came back around 3:30 a.m. Monday and made threats with a gun.

State police said that's when Lawson allegedly took off with his daughter.

Lawson was taken into custody at a friend's home around the corner in Chicago's Avalon Park neighborhood. A woman there says she spoke to him on the porch and called police immediately.

"I said, 'What happened?' He said, 'I got the baby.' I said, 'Hold on,'" Monica Williams said. "I wasn't gonna let him in. I heard on the news he had a gun."
