Mayor seeks tougher gun control laws

The mayor talked about the proposal before touring the police department's new 'Incident Command Van.' The vehicle will provide officers with high speed, wireless Internet access to mug shots and criminal records. During major incidents, officers also will be able to watch real-time video from police helicopters.

As for the mayor's proposal, he wants jail time and a larger fine for anyone found carrying an unregistered gun within 1,000 sq. ft. of a school, park, court house or public housing facility.

"I believe this sends a very strong message that we will not tolerate guns in all of our communities. Our public places, but most of all our public school buildings, should be sanctuaries from violence," Mayor Daley said.

The mayor will present his plan at the next city council meeting.
