A former Chicago Public Schools principal has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor theft. Mirna Diaz was charged with embezzling about $35,000 from Alfred Nobel Elementary School, 4127 W. Hirsch, in the West Humboldt Park community.

Prosecutors say Diaz has repaid the money. Thursday, she was sentenced to two years probation and more than 800 hours of community service.

The judge suggested Diaz spend some of that time reading to children.
