Science Projects

Chicago Public Schools have their science fairs just before Thanksgiving. Many students are already submitting their ideas to their teachers. Suburban schools and private schools may hold their fairs on other dates and times of year.

American Science & Surplus has some unique science project ideas that your child just might enjoy.

Fair Weather Fountain
Couldn't be simpler. A small 6VDC submersible water pump lifts liquid approx 18" and runs off the 10-1/2" x 6-1/4" x 3/4" thick solar panel that's included. No storage battery, so…no sun, no fontana. But do you really care that your little fountain doesn't work in the rain? You're going to be inside anyway. The pump measures 2-5/8" long x 1-3/8" wide x 1-5/8" tall without the 7/8" x 1/4" ID output tube, and has rubber suction-cup feet. The solar panel has a 38" cord to mate with the pump, and a pair of sliding, 1/4" mounting nuts.

HUMAN POWER

Never Weaken
Good advice-and true of this dynamo torch. Actually a (3) LED flashlight, but we think the manufacturer had the Brits in mind when he named it. Has (3) LEDs and a switch that lights (1) or all (3) of them. Runs on an internal, rechargeable lithium-ion battery that you crank up-(1) minute of winding provides (30) minutes of light. (We read it on the box.) And it's a palm-sized cutie that has a very Voyage-to-the-Bottom-of-the-Sea look to it. A must for blackouts!

Crank Up The Volume
In fact, crank up the power that runs this handy emergency/camping AM/FM radio, flashlight, siren combo. Runs off a hand-crank dynamo: 60 seconds of cranking gets you about 20 minutes of radio, 40 minutes of light, or a couple of minutes of siren. Runs on a rechargeable internal battery or (2) "AAA" batteries, included. Measures a 5-1/2" x 3-5/8" x 2-1/4" oval, with a pop-up handle, a 6" wrist strap, and an antenna.

OTHER POWER

Experiments in Future Technics
Thames & Kosmos® offers Power House, an extraordinary introduction to regenerative energy sources and sustainable living. Young scientists age 12 and up use the components of the kit to build a model house and (20) other energy-related devices, learning about energy from the sun, wind, plants, and electrochemical reactions. Along the way, they cook a potato with sunlight, make fresh water from salt water, galvanize a nail and split water into hydrogen and oxygen, and much more. The 96-page, full-color manual integrates experiments and activities with an engaging story line. The kit carries The National Parenting Center Seal of Approval, and is the winner of a Preferred Choice Award from Creative Child Magazine. Very, very nice.
