Brain injury may boost epilepsy risk

February 23, 2009 A new study finds the risks can linger for more than a decade after they are first hurt.

The study in the journal The Lancet suggests there may be a window to prevent the condition.

A Danish team found that the odds of epilepsy more than doubled afar mild brain injury or skull fracture and was 7 times more likely in patients with serious brain injury.

Researchers say their data suggests a long time interval for potential preventive treatment of high-risk patients.
