Studies report harmful effects of common chemical

June 10, 2009 Bisphenol A is found in clear plastic bottles and other everyday items. Experts say, not only are humans probably being exposed to generally unsafe levels of BPA, but a new study finds it could be causing arrhythmias, or irregular heartbeats.

Experts say this could be especially problematic for women who may be at higher risk for this type of cardiac threat.

Another study found BPA affects fertility in the offspring of rodents. The genes that are necessary for normal pregnancy are altered.

The studies were presented at the Endocrine Society's annual meeting in D.C.
