Teamsters protest job cuts

July 16, 2009 On Wednesday, 141 teamsters who drive trucks for eight city departments lost their jobs. An additional 290 members of AFSCME have also been laid off.

Both unions rejected a deal calling for unpaid furlough days and the replacement of overtime with comp time. Many members blame the mayor, saying he asked for too much from them.

No new negotiations are scheduled. The mayor's office says the layoffs will have little impact on city services.
