Racial integration pioneer dies

August 25, 2009 (GARY, Ind.) Hazel B. Sanders, 96, was the last survivor of the 'Emerson 18.'

Sanders was 14 years old in 1927, when the group of students was assigned to the all white Emerson school because their black school was overcrowded. White students threatened them, taunted them with racial epithets and then walked out in a boycott.

Sanders eventually dropped out of school and received a diploma from a correspondence school 12 years later.
