ERs preparing for potentially busy flu season

Emergency room readiness to treat children could be vital this fall with swine flu expected to hit youngsters particularly hard. But past research has shown that many emergency rooms lack the special equipment and supplies to treat children.

Now, new guidelines aim to raise awareness of the deficiencies at the nation's ER centers and improve preparedness. Among the recommendations will be a list of essential equipment, medications, personal training and key policies necessary for optimal pediatric emergency care.

The recommendations are detailed in this month's journal Pediatrics.
