Weis: Benefit not in good taste

October 24, 2009 Frugoli has been charged with drunk driving, reckless homicide, and leaving the scene of an accident, a fiery crash that killed two young men.

It happened in April on the Dan Ryan expressway. Fausto Manzera and Andrew Cazares died.

Friday night, police officers, friends and family held a benefit for Frugoli at police union headquarters. Outside the event, loved ones of the victims held a vigil.

The Fraternal Order Police said it did not sponsor the event but rented the hall to Frugoli's friends.

"I was kind of disappointed we would have an event like that and perhaps not think about how it would impact upon the families of the two individuals who lost their lives," said Supt. Jody Weis. "Regardless of what the officer may have done, there's still bills and his family still has to get by. But there's ways to do it that I think would show a much greater sensitivity toward the families."

Weis spoke at a meeting on the South Side to discuss community policing, school violence and other police issues.
