Daley: McCormick Place could become 'empty shell'

November 24, 2009 (CHICAGO) The mayor spoke Tuesday while touring the Greater Chicago Food Depository. He stressed that a difficult economy makes it especially important to help the needy and hungry.

Daley added that the city, county, and state benefit greatly from McCormick Place jobs and tax revenue, but some shows are leaving for less expensive sites.

"If we keep raising the costs here, McCormick Place will be an empty shell. McCormick Place better realize they better get that cost down. Because what's really killing us is Atlanta, Orlando, and Las Vegas," said Mayor Daley. "This is very, very important. You'll lose all these trade shows and conventions."

Daley met with the McCormick Place management and labor Tuesday. He said he also met with trade show and convention officials.
