Truck speed limits go up Jan. 1

December 7, 2009 The speed limit for trucks weighing more than four tons is going up to 65 miles per hour.

Illinois Department of Transportation crews will begin getting rid of the signs indicating a 55 mile per hour limit shortly after the new year begins. About 1,800 miles of roads are affected.

Enforcement of the new speed limit for truckers starts January 1.

Three times lawmakers approved raising the speed limit for semis from 55 to 65 mph. Former governor Rod Blagojevich vetoed it each time.

Those who want trucks to legally travel at 65 mph argue it's safer for them to be moving more with the flow of traffic. Opponents say faster-moving rigs are more dangerous.
