Gov. Pat Quinn attended the International Kennel Club Dog Show in Chicago and support the owners of rescue and service dogs.He proclaimed the day, "Humane Pet Treatment Day."

Quinn was joined Saturday by representatives from several animal welfare groups.

During the recession, many pet owners have been forced to give up their four-legged friends.

"If you are losing your home or something, don't leave your pet because you're just leaving it there to die. Take it to a shelter; take it to a rescue. We're overburdened, but we'll make do," said Steve Zorn of Precious Pets Almost Home.

The show continues Sunday at McCormick Place convention center.
