Eight police officers from south suburban Calumet City have lost their jobs as the city tries to trim its budget.

The Northwest Indiana Times reports that the mayor has said there could be more layoffs. She told the newspaper five more officers could be cut if the police union does not approve cost-cutting measures.

The city has reportedly notified unions representing the city's public works and clerical employees that they could be facing layoffs unless they agree to concessions.
