Exercise, fewer sedatives may speed ICU recovery

New research from Johns Hopkins finds that giving seriously ill patients a break from sedatives and a prescription for exercise can speed recovery.

That link is not new. But, what researchers are now finding is, the increase appears in middle-aged men with even mild apnea.

The report from the National Institutes of Health also shows, the more severe the apnea in men, the higher the stroke risk.

Among women, the risk only goes up if the apnea is severe.

Researchers say the disparity may be due to men developing sleep apnea earlier and leaving it untreated for longer periods of time.

Obstructive sleep apnea is a disorder caused by narrowing or blocked airways which disrupt sleep and breathing.
