Suspects in bat attack appear in court

May 3, 2010 (CHICAGO)

Marcy Cruz and Heriberto Viramontes are accused of attacking two women with a baseball bat on April 23. Both suspects appeared in court Monday. A judge ordered they be swabbed for DNA.

Cruz's father, Edwin Cruz, and her boyfriend, Josue Espinosa, were at the court hearing.

"She wasn't on her medication. She's bipolar, she's not all there in her mind," said Edwin Cruz.

"I know Marcy. She's a good person. She would never get involved in something like this," said Espinosa.

Viramontes allegedly struck Stacy Jurich and Natasha McShane with a wooden bat during the attack while Cruz waited in a nearby van. Both are charged with aggravated battery and armed robbery.

McShane, a 23-year-old grad student from Northern Ireland, remains hospitalized in critical condition. Jurich has been released from the hospital and scheduled to begin rehabilitation.
