There is new hope for overweight girls at risk for type-2 diabetes. According to a study published online in Diabetes Care, losing weight by adulthood could dramatically cut that risk.

Researchers followed more than 100,000 female nurses and tracked the development of diabetes over a 16-year period. Those women who were overweight during childhood but lost weight into adulthood were no more likely to become diabetics.

Researchers say the results underscore why reversing weight gain in children is critical to lowering the risk of developing diabetes later in life.
