Possible antidepressant link to cataracts

June 1, 2010

A new study finds these antidepressants, known as SSRIs, appear to boost the risk of developing cataracts among seniors.

The increase was calculated to be approximately 15 percent.

Authors of the study reporting in the journal Opthalmology say, at that rate,...22,000 Americans would theoretically develop cataracts as a result of their antidepressant use.

Strong links to cataracts were found with Luvox, Effexor, and Paxil.

Scientists note that not all antidepressants appeared to have this link.
