Dangers of tanning beds, latest on sun protection

July 19, 2010

Melanoma is now the most common form of cancer for 25- to 29-year-olds. One person dies every hour from skin cancer.

The American Academy of Dermatology is launching a new campaign urging people to protect themselves. It tells the tragic story of a young woman who died from melanoma just before turning 30.

Sadly, that story is becoming more common. In that story, Jaime started using tanning beds when she was in her 20s and died before 30.

Studies show indoor tanning is associated with a 75-percent increased risk of melanoma.

There is a gene linked to some forms of melanoma having a parent/sibling with melanoma is a risk factor.
