Officials in one south suburb took the unusual step this week of voting to cut their own salaries.

The Hazel Crest village board voted 4-to-3 in favor of lowering the annual salary for village trustees from $15,000 to $5,700 starting in may.

In addition, the mayor's salary was reduced.

The cuts are effective after the April 2013 election.
