IDOT: Crews ready to salt icy roads

November 16, 2010 (CHICAGO)

According to IDOT, crews have plenty of salt available for this winter. The department said its 1900 pieces of equipment and 3900 workers are ready to deal with snow operations.

Also, the Illinois Tollway said it has 196 snow plows that can cover 16,000 miles in a 12 hour shift.

"There are certain things that go on every year in inclement weather, black ice being one of the most severe because you don't see it especially when the film develops so it is a re-education and there's never enough education," said Carmen Iacullo, IDOT.

One problem could be the Congress Bridge downtown that will be undergoing construction throughout the winter and make snow removal difficult.
