A new blood thinner may be an effective, convenient and safer treatment for patients dealing with DVT, or deep vein thrombosis.

According to the research published in the New England Journal of Medicines, the drug called Rivaroxaban, or Xarelto, could offer a new option for these possible life-threatening clots. They most typically form in the lower leg or thigh.

Scientists say Rivaroxaban is at least as effective as the older drug Warfarin, easier to use and seems safer.

The study was funded in part by the makers of the drug.
