Todd Stroger seeks unemployment benefits

Just like thousands of Illinoisans who have lost their jobs, former Cook County Board President Todd Stroger has applied for unemployment benefits.

However, he might not qualify so the administration of new board President Toni Preckwinkle is protesting the claim.

Generally, benefits are tied to wages earned in the year leading up to the job loss, but state law does not recognize the wages an elected leader earns in office when it comes to unemployment benefits.

If approved for benefits, Stroger would get about $530 a week.
