Scientists have discovered 13 new gene variants that might increase the risk of heart disease.

That's exciting news because heart disease is the world's No. 1 killer, and this discovery could shed light on causes and lead to more effective treatments.

The study in the journal Nature Genetics analyzed data from 14 previous studies.

Scientists say many of these gene variants have no relation to known cardiovascular risk factors. And, they add, that could open up new opportunities for future research and discovery.
