Two Chicago police officers shot a man who pointed a gun at them, but it turns out it was a fake gun.

The officers were patrolling 71st and St. Lawrence, which they say is an area known for gang and drug activity.

When they encountered the man, he reportedly took off running and he pointed his weapon at officers.

The man was taken into custody and hospitalized, police said.

Police recovered drugs from him. Neither officer was injured.

An investigation into the shooting is underway.
