Same-sex adoption measure defeated in committee

An Illinois Senate committee has defeated a measure that would have allowed faith-based organizations to refuse same-sex couples who wanted to be foster or adoptive parents.

The measure failed by one vote in the senate executive committee. It would have amended the civil unions law that goes into effect June 1.

If it had passed, faith-based agencies would have referred same-sex couples to non-religious agencies.
