New safety standards for toddler beds

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has approved a new mandatory standard for beds built for children who are too big for cribs but too small for a full-sized bed.

Among the new requirements, toddler bed guard rails must be at least five inches above the mattress and warning labels to about entrapment and strangulation risks must appear on the beds.

Cribs that convert to toddler beds must also meet the new standards.

The new regulations go into effect about six months after publication.
