Olive oil may protect against stroke

The Mediterranean diet is considered to have numerous health benefits. It focuses on high quality foods such fresh fruits and vegetables, fish and even a little wine.

Another distinct component of this diet is olive oil. Authors of a study in the journal Neurology wanted to see if the amount of olive oil consumed is linked to stroke.

Participants who reported using olive oil a lot were at a 41 percent lower risk of having a stroke. This meant they used olive oil in both cooking and as a dressing or with bread.

Researchers conclude the oil may protect against stroke but they stopped short of saying it lowers risk.
