Certain painkillers may boost miscarriage risk

September 6, 2011

A new study finds common non-steroidal anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen, aspirin and naproxen could more than double a woman's risk of miscarriage.

The warning does not apply to acetaminophen or tylenol.

Canadian researchers found the risk of miscarriage was strongest for women who took those drugs during their first 20 weeks of pregnancy, although the drugs are also known to be dangerous during the third trimester as well.

The study appears in the current Canadian Medical Association Journal.
