Report: All-girls Catholic school converting to public, coed

October 7, 2011 (CHICAGO)

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the Catholic school overlooking Chicago's Marquette Park will end its tradition in 2013. The facility will gradually convert to a coed, kindergarten through 12th grade public charter school.

Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne Burke and Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez are among Maria alumnae.

The school on South California Avenue has struggled to survive for many years. Enrollment peaked at 1,400 in the 1960s and is only 200 now.
